Spring Choir Tour!

April 16, 2008

Categories: Ian Wohlgemuth's Blog

Whooo weeee has it been a wild time here at Tabor, and away from Tabor as well.

To start with, choir tour. I had an amazing time! We started in Tulsa, OK, on March 30th. I was very happy to be in Tulsa singing because my uncle Steve lives there, and I have some friends from high school in the area. They all came out to hear us sing during the Sunday morning services at the First Baptist Church in downtown Tulsa.

That Sunday night we then traveled to Edmond, Ok and sang in the Memorial Road MB Church. That night I stayed with a wonderful couple, the Blough’s, their kids all went to Tabor. That night there were tornadic storms going north of Oklahoma City, so before they came through we had the brilliant idea of jumping in their pool. Keep in mind this is March in the Midwest, the water was only about 55 degrees.

The next day we traveled to Corn, OK. We sang for the high school and middle school students at Corn Bible Academy. They were very enthusiastic (although I think they just wanted to be out of class longer). I stayed with the same couple for two nights. They had a 102 year old farm house about 10 miles from any light. That first night the three of us staying there went out for a run. I had to stop and look at the stars. I had never seen so many!

We stayed for two nights because the next day we traveled to Cordell, Ok. Approximately 20 miles away. When we get there I decide that I’m going to be the good track athlete and go hurdle. I take my friend Katie and we go in search of the track, I had an idea of were the high school was, but not the track. As we get closer I see lights so I assume that to be the football field. We walk all the way around the outside of the of fence and when we get to the open gate, they don’t have a track! By this time it was getting late and we had to get back to the church for dinner.

This brings me to Wednesday. We are in Fairview I skip lunch and I go with fellow choir member Megan Souter, who is from Fairview, to the high school track. I finally get my workout. Her dad then pics us up and we go with the bus driver, and get Pizza Hut. We had a lot of time that afternoon to relax so Kayla Vix Jenny and I get out my computer and we have fun taking pictures.

That night I stayed with the Bell’s. They are really nice people. Their son dated a girl from my church for a while actually.

The next day we went to Enid. My dad came down to hear us. He was leaving the next morning for San Antonio. He had row 13 final four tickets. Needless to say I was jealous. My dad and I both stayed with his good friend Randy Hamm. The choir guys all went out to the hot tub and chilled for a long time that night, it was great!

The next day we go to my church in Wichita. But I, being the good track athlete that hasn’t done much work, go out to my high school track and do a quick pre-meet workout. The problem was there was a JV meet at the same time, so I had to dodge a lot of freshman runners.

After the concert that night I was so exhausted from the crazy week that is choir tour, but no, I had to get up the next morning and run at Friends.

Spring Time!

March 19, 2008

Categories: Ian Wohlgemuth's Blog

The spring semester is going good, the weather has been nice. Track has been going along pretty well. My classes are very enjoyable. After I had a bad high school history teacher I never thought I could enjoy history, but I am really enjoying my class right now. In all my classes I am just enjoying them. I don’t even complain about the homework (much). Because the weather has been nice, I’ve been able to get out on the track quite a bit. I am feeling much better about hurdles now. We just had our first meet this past weekend in McPherson. For being 40 and windy, I was happy with my run.

Choir is gearing up for tour. We’ve already had three run-out’s, in Horton, Sabetha, and Abilene. This year we are going to Oklahoma. I’m very excited to go and see friends and family! If the choir is going to be at your church, I’d be very happy to meet some of my readers.

I hope everyone has an Excellent Easter. And remember Jesus died on the Cross for our sins.

Coming soon… High School Proms, Baseball games, Work-study, and Choir Tour.

Track Meets and Long Drives

February 20, 2008

Categories: Ian Wohlgemuth's Blog

This past Friday I finally became an official college athlete. A group of sprinters traveled to Kearney, Nebraska and competed against several other teams from both Kansas and Nebraska.

The ride in the van was rather long. About 5 hours each way. Although I didn’t sleep everybody else had a good nap.

Once we got to the track we had a very successful day as a team. My friend Tamera ran the 55m and 200m. She placed 4th in the 55 and 3rd in the 200. Tasia, who is still busy with basketball, qualified for Indoor Nationals in the 55m.

I ran my hurdles race. It was my first race at the 42” height, and first race at the 55m distance. Despite being new, I felt I did very well. My time was 9.45, not as fast as I had hoped, but about where I expected to be. It’s now one month until we start outdoor meets, and I can’t wait.

Starting My Spring Semester!

February 06, 2008

February 6, 2008

January 2008 I saw the start of a new year, a new class, a new team, and a new semester. For interterm 08 I took English Comp. & Lit. It was taught by Chris Dick. It was the best English class I have ever taken. One reason was it only lasted for 3 weeks, another is Chris is an awesome teacher. I also went to Larry Nickel’s house (President of Tabor College), he had a little party for all the students there. I went Ice Skating with a lot of people from campus, and had an awesome time playing in the unusually snowy Hillsboro.

With the start of interterm I also started my first season as a college athlete. Indoor track practiced started January 8th. The training so far has been focused on running the 60 meter hurdles. In these few short weeks of practice, I already feel faster now, then I felt last May. The way practice is structured is similar to my high school’s but they are more focused on the individual. We also have mandatory weight training 4 days a week. My prior experience with the weight room consisted of looking at it and turning down the other hall to go to the elliptical. My first meet is coming up on the 15th, wish me luck!

Interterm is a 4 week period after Christmas break, and before the Spring semester starts. As I said my class was only 3 weeks so I had a week that all I did was go to work for 2 hours in the afternoon, and track for 2+ hours after that. Needless to say I am now very well rested and my room has never been cleaner. Tuesday of my week off I decided to get involved in the upcoming presidential election. Presidential candidate Barak Obama made a stop in El Dorado, KS about an hour from here. I couldn’t pass up seeing someone who might be president. We got there kinda late, but were in the first row of the overflow section. I shook his hand twice! I still don’t know who I am going to vote for in November, but seeing a politician in person really got me interested in the whole process.

You can’t see it here where we waited in line for over an hour in 15* Kansas Blizzard. The queue was fun though

After my week of relaxation and fun, It was time to get back into school. I am taking a lighter load this semester. I have an Excel and Access class that is completely online. I can work at my own pace, and hopefully be done before spring break. I have US History 1, Chem 2, and my PE class—Tumbling. I don’t know anything about it, but college is about learning new and crazy things. Here goes nothing!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! Being back on campus now is great. Getting back into the groove of school gives me something to do with my time.

Let’s go back to the end of last semester. We had one wacky finals week. There was an epic ice storm that came through the day before my hardest finals. The storm wiped out power to all of Hillsboro and most of central Kansas. I was out at one of my friends grandparents house this night and when I came back into town the only light I could see in any direction was the new townhouses. They included an emergency generator to power the townhouses and Lorenz Buildings. I settled in and started studying in one of the townhouses. Around 2 the morning of my sociology and chemistry finals I hear this cheering out by girls quad, I look through the blinds and see that the power came back on! I make my way to my room, shower and make sure I’m ready to go for my finals.

After I finished with my finals I went back home to relax for a couple weeks. My cousin’s and grandparents came over for an early Christmas celebration despite 9 inches of blizzard. I was lucky enough to shovel our driveway. There was a snow drift covering my whole car. New Years came and went. I hung out with some friends from church and Hillsboro.

Now that I’m back on campus I’m taking an interterm class. I have English Comp & Lit; The second level English here. I have started Track practice daily from 3:30 to 5:30 or 6:00. And I still have to fit working in the business building, and daily reading assignments. This is going to be busy month!

Thanksgiving Break

November 28, 2007

“Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow!” Over Thanksgiving break I went home to Wichita. We had our first snow of the season.

It snowed between 2 and 3 inches. Over break I reconnected with old friends, went shopping with my family, cut down a Christmas tree, got a haircut, saw the Bee Movie with my family, and oh yeah, had an awesome Thanksgiving Dinner. The whole Wohlgemuth family got together. My grandma Barbara, Uncle Steve and aunt Linda, and my family all had a Thanksgiving dinner at my house. My mom cooked a delicious meal.

When all was said and done it was time to return to school. I was very surprised to see snow still on the ground in the middle of the quad. It was about 40 degrees and sunny that day.

In the spirit of Christmas I decided to list my favorite Christmas songs.

2000 Miles – Coldplay Believe – Josh Groban Happy Christsmas – John Lennon Light a Candle – Avalon O Holy Night – Josh Groban Sleigh Ride – Johnny Mathis When Love Came Down – Point of Grace

Sadie Hawkins

November 07, 2007

Wow time sure flies. It seems like I started classes a week ago, now it is almost Thanksgiving!

Last weekend Student Activities Board put on the Sadie Hawkins activities. There were three different nights with things to do. On Thursday night there was the 80’s themed roller skating in Hutchinson. It was a blast!

After we went skating a bunch of us went to Ihop right down the road in Hutch and had a good breakfast at midnight

On Friday night there was an Oriental Dinner. I was not able to go but I heard the food was awesome.

Saturday night I was sitting in my room, nobody had asked me to Hoe-down. Needless to say I was not too happy. Then at 8:00 my phone rings and my friend Andrea asks if I wanted to go. Of course I do! Anyways because it was so last minute I didn’t have time to go home and get my cowboy costume, so I just went in what I was wearing. The SAB really did a good job setting up 4-H building, and getting Root Beer and bobbing for apples for everyone!

Tabor Homecoming Weekend & More!

October 24, 2007

Categories: Ian Wohlgemuth's Blog

Hello readers!! Here’s the update on my life. Two weeks ago was mid-terms. It seems like just last week I was moving in here at Tabor. I actually did ok on all of my tests that week. I got an “A” on my Chemistry Test, and Sociology Test. And for Bible in the Modern World we do and inductive Bible study using the FORRMAL method and I got an “A” on that paper. I extremely relieved my first round of big tests went well. After that I had two extra days off for fall break. It was a greatly needed time to just relax and hang out with friends from home.

This past weekend was Homecoming. My family came up from Wichita for some of the festivities.

My day started bright and early for our 9 o’clock choir performance. It was a packed house and from what I heard everyone enjoyed it a lot.

My Brother, Reed, enjoyed the Homecoming Kids Carnival put on by our Junior Elementary Education Major students. The snow cones, moon bounce, and a petting zoo where the big highlights for him.

After that I went with my family to the townhouse dedication ceremony. There were several Faculty members and Students that spoke. Ribbons were cut by someone representing each hall’s name.

Then in the afternoon there was the football game vs. Bethel College. Everybody showed up to support the Blue and Gold.

These pictures here are actually from the Bethany game but I think they represent the day well.

That night I attended the Homecoming musical HONK! Seeing as pictures where prohibited I decided it best to not break copyright laws or anything.

Two Most Asked Questions!

September 27, 2007

Categories: Ian Wohlgemuth's Blog

So the two questions I am most commonly asked are the following

What is your major?

and

What is the food like?

So I thought I would tell the world my thoughts on both

Right now I have not decided what my major will be. I have narrowed it down to a couple of areas. Chemistry or Business. It is obvious what a business major can do for a job, but I just don’t know what jobs are out there for Chemistry majors except teaching.

And I asked my friend Gilbert to show me his favorite meal in the caf.

He starts by getting the lettuce in the salad bar.

He then grills onions, peppers, sausage, and turkey on the grills.

Then he tops it all of with cheese, salad dressing, and seasons.

I really enjoy the sandwich and salad bars, and alternating Mexican/Italian area. The breakfast bar for those mid-morning snacks has filled my belly many times. The regular meals served with the line are always very good too. My favorite meal so far has been pizza.

I try to get to as many soccer games as possible. Here are a few pictures from the Tabor vs. Bethel games.

My Classes!

September 13, 2007

Categories: Ian Wohlgemuth's Blog

Yikes, I can’t believe that it has been 2 weeks since I started classes. I am taking 15 hours this semester. On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday I’ve got a full load of classes.

  • 8:00 – Intro to Sociology with Deb Grey
  • 10:00 – Bible in the Modern World with Doug Miller
  • 11:00 – Chemistry 1 with Bruce Heyen
  • Lunch from 11:50 – 12:10
  • 12:10 – Concert Choir with Brad Vogal
  • 1:30 – Chapel
  • 2:30 – TC 101 with Deb Grey

On Tuesdays and Thursdays I have only one class 9:30 Public Speaking with Linda Cantwell and a Thursday Chemistry Lab

Buying books was a new experience for me. Going into the bookstore I realized that college will be a completely different thing than high school.

Today I went to the Jaywash to wash my towels. I met some new friends while writing this in there. Doing laundry is very convenient. I recommend bringing a roll of quarters with you.

After washing my towels I made my way over to “The Mall” to do some studying on a beautiful day. I used the wireless network here to check the temperature and it is 76 degrees and sunny. I just wish I had brought a blanket because my butt is getting a little wet in the grass.

I’ve been meeting so many people around here that are great Christians. I have especially enjoyed getting to know my professors on a one to one basis. The campus is great, and despite being an isolated small town there is always plenty to do.
