Cross Country and Track Standout Gary Janzen Inducted to Tabor College Athletic Hall of Fame

Gary Janzen, a two-sport standout from 1963 through 1966, who was the first Bluejay runner to compete at the national NAIA finals in 1966, has been inducted into the Tabor College Athletic Hall of Fame.
Janzen, who lives in Enid, Okla., lettered two years in cross country and three in track and field while setting records in both sports. He graduated in 1966 with a bachelor’s in Health and Physical Education.
In cross country, Janzen helped his team to 18 consecutive victories in dual and triangular meets, while serving as the coach his senior season. In track and field, Janzen set many individual and team relay records in his three seasons.
His coach was quoted in the Tabor College newspaper, saying, “Gary’s efforts in anchoring relays have been electrifying: when behind, he is tough on a quarter or half-mile as demonstrated by a 1:54 half to anchor the two mile relay team to within a yard of second place at the Graceland Relays.”
During Gary’s senior season, he battled back from an emergency appendectomy to earn the honor of being named the track team’s Most Valuable Runner in 1966.
In his senior season on the track, Gary set records in the 880 yard run, two mile run, and as a member of the distance medley and the two mile relays. The two mile relay record of 8:00.8 still stands today as the best mark prior to the metric conversion in track and field.
After graduating, Janzen went on to teach Physical Education, Business, and Drivers Education, and coaching six years in Oklahoma, twelve years in Indiana, seven years in Michigan, and twelve years in Kansas. Gary has also served as an Athletic Director for seven years as well.
Gary coached baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, cross country, softball, men’s and women’s track, and junior high football and track. He led his track teams to 13 conference championships, while producing seven state placers in 10 events. Three of Gary’s athletes went on to become college All-Americans.
Gary and his wife, Lois, have a son, Eric and a daughter, Elisa, who are both married. The couple has four grandchildren.

The Tabor College track and field squads swept the team titles and turned in a handful of notable performances during their first meet of the season in McPherson Saturday.
“The first meet of the year is always a little scary because both coaches and athletes don’t know what to expect,” coach Dave Kroeker said. “It was pretty cold and windy until late in the meet so good performances were made even more difficult.”
The women’s team posted 133 points in 19 events for first place.
“Although both the men’s and the women’s teams won team titles, the chance to finally get to compete under the gun was the most important thing for our teams,” Kroeker said. “Everyone got to get a time, distance, or height to start working from in order to improve.”
