Saturday, April 12, 2008 @ Bethel College

Both the Tabor Women’s and Men’s Track teams came home with championship plaques from the ACCK Championships at Bethel on Saturday. The women easily outdistanced Bethany scoring 205 points to 111 for the Swedes. The men’s totals were closer with Tabor topping Bethel 207-192.

Event winners for the women included Shelby Miller in the women’s long jump, Jessica Burden in the pole vault, and Breanna Wray in the women’s hammer. Men’s champions included Silas Hibbs in the men’s pole vault, Justin Ball in the 800m and the 1500m, Adam Dirks in the hammer, Dan Sigley in the 3000m steeplechase, and Andrew Schroter in the 400m hurdles.

The women won all 3 relay events while the men captured the 4×800m relay. (Women’s 4×100: Jennifer Schmidt, Kelli Kopper, Andrea Batista, and Tasia Johnson; 4×400: Kelli Kopper, Liz Kleinsasser, Jennifer Schmidt, and Shelby Miller; 4×800m: Shelby Miller, Liz Kleinsasser, Kelli Kopper, and Heidi Schmidt. Men’s 4×800: Caleb Schroeder, Zac Remboldt, Adam McPeck, and Justin Ball.)

A new school record was set in the women’s hammer (Breanna Wray—148’ 7”) and Jessica Burden equaled the women’s pole vault record of 9’0”.

“It was a team effort all around. This is the 6th straight year for the men and 5 of the last 6 for the women. Our home invitational is this coming Wednesday and we are hoping for some warmer weather for a change and the chance to show what we can do on the track and in the field on our home turf.”

FRIEND’S INVITATIONAL

Saturday, April 5

The Tabor College Men’s and Women’s track teams traveled to windy Wichita, KS, on the last weekend of spring break for the Friend’s Invitational.

“It’s always hard to come back to compete after being away from campus for over a week and be really ready to go but several TC athletes did turn in stellar performances. Tasia Johnson ran in her first meet of the year and turned in a national qualifying mark of 12.28 seconds on the 100M dash. Breanna Wray topped her own school record in the women’s hammer with a throw of 147’ 6”. The women’s 4×100M relay team also set a new school record in that event moving the baton around the track in 49.50 seconds. Relay members included Tasia Johnson, Jennifer Schmidt, Andrea Batista, and Tamara Steward. Shelby Miller won the women’s 400M in 61.54 seconds and Kelli Kopper ran second in 62.51 seconds.

Men who turned in notable efforts included Justin Ball who won the 800M in 2:00.56. He edged the defending conference champion from last year to win the race. Andrew Schroter won the men’s 400M hurdles in 57.80 seconds and Andrew Covin ran 2nd in the 200M (22.22) and the 400M (52.29).

“All in all it was good to get back to competition for both teams. We have 4 weeks until the conference championships back at Friends on Friday/Saturday, May 2nd & 3rd. Next Saturday is the ACCK meet and then on Wednesday, April 16th is our invitational so we will have several opportunities to improve our performances over the next couple of weeks.”

March 15

From the Coach:

The first meet of the year is always a little scary because both coaches and athletes don’t know what to expect. It was pretty cold and windy until late in the meet so good performances were made even more difficult.

Everyone got to get a time, distance, or height to start working from in order to improve. I thought a couple of notable performances were Jera Teselle lowering her 10K school record by over 3 minutes; Adam Dirks throwing a personal record 178’ in the javelin which was only 5’ shy of the NAIA outdoor meet “B” qualifying standard; and Silas Hibbs equaling his best jump from last year in the pole vault of 13’ 6”.

Although both the men’s and the women’s teams won team titles, the chance to finally get to compete under the gun was the most important thing for our teams.

TABOR MEN’S TRACK 2008 PREVIEW

The 2008 Tabor Men’s Track and Field team has a lot of new faces to compliment a good core of returners. Leading the way for the 2008 Tabor men will be KCAC champion and national outdoor championship qualifier, Nathaniel Porter (400M hurdles). Other seniors looking to make this season a successful one are Caleb Schroeder (800M), Jeff Harms (HJ), Matt Dean (TJ/LJ), Matt Vaughn (throws), and newcomer Matt Fox (throws).

Other all KCAC performers expected to excel this spring are juniors Silas Hibbs (PV), Zac Remboldt (800M/Steeplechase), and Tony Loewen (110M/400M hurdles). Sophomores Tim Funk (HJ/hurdles) and Dan Sigley (5K) look to move up in the conference standings after placing last May in the conference meet.

Porter will be joined in the 400M hurdles by Allen County transfer Andrew Schroter who will also run the sprints and transfer Andrew Covin, a sprinter from Waco, TX. Both Schroter and Covin are expected to make big contributions to the TC men’s team.

Other underclassmen that look to improve on their performances last spring include Dustin Burnett (800M), Brent Nelson (400M/800M), Brad Kiser (jumps), Ric Johnson (1500M), and Adam McPeck (800M).

Newcomers that we are counting on to bolster our team include transfer Jonathon Miller (sprints) and freshmen Justin Ball (800M), Adam Dirks (Jav), Brock Fosnight (400M/800M), and Cole Richey (sprints).

Coach Dave Kroeker: “We have a lot of unknowns about this year’s men’s team. There is a lot of potential and we will work hard to turn that potential into reality.”
