Lyndon Vix, an attorney with Fleeson, Gooing, Coulson, & Kitch in Wichita,Kan., and the chairman of the Tabor College Board of Directors, gave his advice on life to the 2010 graduating class of Tabor College at the college’s 100th Commencement Exercises held May 22 in the Joel H. Wiens Stadium.

Tabor College Chairman of the Board Lyndon Vix gives the graduating class life advice during his keynote address at Tabor’s Graduation. Vix is a 1982 graduate of Tabor College and now works as an attorney with the law firm of Fleeson, Gooing, Coulson, & Kitch in Wichita Kan.

Tabor President Dr. Jules Glanzer conferred 100 bachelor’s degrees and two associate degrees on students from the Hillsboro campus. Seventeen Bachelor of Science and 29 Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees were awarded to students from the School of Adult and Graduate Studies in Wichita. In addition, for the first year in the college’s history, Master of Business Administration degrees were given to eight students from the Wichita campus.

“The fact that this year there are exactly 100 bachelor’s degree graduates on the Hillsboro campus is just a little serendipity,” said Vix.

The stadium bleachers were packed for the college’s first outdoor commencement. All previous exercises were held in the school’s gymnasium. Although the sun was shining brightly, the blustering winds forced the graduates to hold onto their hats as they received their diplomas.

The ceremony began with the invocation by Teresa Pearson, Adult and Graduate Studies class representative, followed by an official welcome from President Glanzer. The audience then sang “Be Thou My Vision” accompanied by the Tabor College Symphonic Band, directed by Dr. Richard Cantwell, Professor of Instrumental Music.

The Professor Fran Jabara Leadership Awards were presented to seniors Andrew Wiens, Topeka, Kan., and Heidi Glanzer, Abilene, Kan. Both received cash awards and plaques in honor of the leadership skills they demonstrated during their time at Tabor College, as well as for their future leadership potential.

Graduates Andrew Wiens, Topeka, Kan., and Graduate Heidi Glanzer, Abilene, Kan., receives the Professor Fran Jabara Leadership Award from President Jules Glanzer. The award is given in honor of the leadership skills they exhibited while at Tabor and their future leadership potential. Wiens is a biblical and religious studies, philosophy, business administration, and history major. Glanzer is an English and secondary education major.

After the presentation of the awards, Aaron Whitelaw, from Milwaukee Wis., gave the graduation address on behalf of the Hillsboro campus students, followed by the anthem, “My God Is a Rock,” sung by the Tabor College Choir, conducted by Dr. Brad Vogel, Professor of Choral Music.

The second graduation address, given on behalf of the students from the School of Adult and Graduate Studies, was presented by Benjamin Marquez, a student from Wichita in the Bachelor’s of Science program. Kayla Vix, Wichita, read the scripture, Psalms 73: 21-28, before the keynote address began.

In his speech, “Everything You Need to Know About Life in 15 Minutes or Less,” Vix shared tips on life he learned “just by living it.”

The first thing he told the graduates is that they don’t know anything. “I’m not talking about knowledge, I’m talking about knowing,” Vix said. “Knowledge is simply accumulating facts; knowing is making that knowledge work for you.”

He warned the graduates that as they start the rest of their lives, they’re going to be the equivalents of freshman all over again. He went on to say although the students don’t know anything, they know enough.

“Now, I’m talking about knowledge,” Vix said. “Thanks to the professors of Tabor College you have the knowledge you need and for that reason, you should take your next step with confidence.”

He also said Tabor had prepared the graduates in another way. Being at Tabor meant that the students had run into Jesus in some way, at least once or twice. Vix said those encounters will have an impact on the students’ lives, even if they don’t realize it now.

Other advice offered by Vix included buying insurance, making use of experts, developing perspectives, singing, appreciating the past, being humble, being loyal, taking a moment before reacting, setting their contentment bar low, and that the worst and best parts of their lives are yet to come.

In closing, Vix told the graduates one more thing: to forget the title of his speech.

“Never believe that you have learned everything there is to know about life,” he said. “Never stop questioning; never stop learning. The graduates were presented by Provost Dr. Lawrence Ressler. Dr. Doug Miller presented the gold honor cords, while Dr. Glanzer presented the diplomas. Gift Bibles were given to the graduates on behalf of the Alumni Council by Director of Alumni, Marlene Fast.

Graduate Torey Hett, Marion, Kan., receives his diploma from Tabor President Jules Glanzer while Dean of Adult & Graduate Studies Tona Leiker, Dr, Doug Miller, and Lyndon Vix watch in approval. Hett is a business administration major.

Senior Class President Roxanne Stauffer, Millford, Neb., gave the graduating class response, which was followed by the audience singing the Tabor Hymn, “Redeemed of God,” accompanied by the band. Julianna Richardson, Grant, Neb., concluded the ceremony with the benediction.
