Tabor College to Co-Host Christian Concert in Newton Nov. 14
November 09, 2009
Categories: General News
The Southern District Youth Conference of the Mennonite Brethren Church and Tabor College are co-hosting a public concert featuring three contemporary Christian groups, The Afters, Abandon Kansas, and Dave Thompson, beginning at 8 p.m., Saturday Nov. 14, at Newton High School, located at 900 W. 12th Street, in Newton, Kan.
Admission for the general public is $10 and $5 for current Tabor students.
According to Marc Penner, Co-Director of the Southern District Youth Conference (SDYC), this is the first headline concert the SDYC has hosted in many years. The last one was the Plankeye concert about 10-15 years ago.
“We wanted to try something new and special, so we contacted The Afters, Abandon Kansas, and Dave Thompson as artists for the concert,” said Penner, adding that he hoped the public will turn out in large numbers for the event.
“The Afters put on a great show, and Abandon Kansas has just signed a new record deal with Gotee Records, so this may be a chance to catch a major band in their beginning stages,” Penner added.
Dr. Linda Cantwell, Vice President of Enrollment Management and Marketing at Tabor College, said she became eager for the college to co-sponsor the concert when she saw the event as a way for Tabor to reach the public and numerous Mennonite Brethren youth at the same time.
According to Cantwell, one of the reasons why Tabor College was founded was to educate and train Christian workers and send them back to serve the MB Church. Many of the youth who will attend SDYC conference will be “legacy students,” the sons, daughters and grandchildren of Tabor alums.
“I was told that SDYC is the largest single gathering of MB youth in the Midwest, so partnering with SDYC for this concert seemed like a natural fit,” Cantwell added.
