Centennial Quilt Auction
A Quilt Auction to benefit the Carson Center for Missions, Service and Global Education proved to be one of the big highlights of the Tabor College Centennial Homecoming weekend.
According to auction organizers, 18 groups and individuals donated quilts for the event. The quilts were displayed in Hillsboro area businesses throughout Homecoming week, and then in the Historic Church.
“When the Tabor Centennial Quilt Auction Committee asked for quilts to be donated to benefit the Carson Center, we had no idea we’d receive such an amazing outpouring of generosity from quilters in California to Minnesota,” said committee member Sheryl Lehr. “The variety and quality of workmanship represented in this relatively small group of quilts is truly inspiring. The range of sizes, and techniques used, is unexpected and we are so grateful for all the donations. We also are taking this opportunity to auction several rugs that were donated anonymously to the college.”
Proceeds from the Quilt Auction will be used to engage and connect students, faculty and staff with the world around them through The Carson Center, which exists to engage students in missions, service and global education.
The Carson Center was established as a result of the closing of the Carson Mennonite Brethren Church in Delft, Minnesota. In the fall of 2005, the church generously gave Tabor College part of the proceeds from closing. A partnership now exists between The Carson Center and Mennonite Brethren Mission and Service International (MBMSI), the global mission agency of MB churches in Canada and the United States. Through MBMSI’s short term mission program TREK, Tabor has been developing a relationship with churches, educators and business professionals in India. Students have participated in two trips to India, and, during spring break, students served in Kansas City and New Orleans.
